Rather to my surprise, my morning email included a Dreamwidth invite on the lottery of beta invite codes, which marks possibly the first time I have ever won a draw, in several decades of life. (Unless you count winning a spin-the-wheel at a pub quiz.) Thanks Denise, this probably made my day as much for the winning anything at all ever part as for the shiny Dreamwidth part!

So here I am, dithering at the "Purchase a paid account" stage still open in the other Firefox tab, since it says 'Paid accounts will go on sale on 30 April 2009. You can manually upgrade your account to test the "Paid Account" functions during our closed beta phase, but you can't make a payment yet.' So is the testing free or not? I am naturally curious about the functions as I might consider getting a paid account in the single permanent account sale that may happen (like Emperor I prefer a once-off payment model to a rent model - can there be something to astrology after all?), but I don't want to commit myself to any payments right now.

Yup, you can test paid accounts for free, by manually upgrading your account. It will be reverted back to free account status before the official site launch on April 30th.

(I hope you don't mind a stranger dropping by. I was just browsing around random journals).

Not at all, thanks! Do you mind if I add you to my reading page? (still learning the lingo here...) I was born American, grew up in Italy from age 5 to 20 and came to the UK to study so I would be interested in your perspective.

Add away. I like meeting new people!

Wow, that makes me even more eager to get to know you. Few things fascinate me more than an outsider's perspective on Italy. :D

Yes, if you manually upgrade your account using the beta tool, it's totally free. We'll re-set everyone's accounts before accounts go on sale, and using that tool during closed beta isn't any sort of obligation to buy -- it's just there so people can poke at all of the features while we're still testing!

(And welcome!)

Hi - I keep meaning to do a Dreamwidth post as well. I got my invite a couple of days ago, but this is the first chance I've really had to play with it.

And I pretty much never win raffles either.

Seeing this post on LJ sent me scrambling to check my email, which I hadn't yet done. I shall try to be organised and do more stuff in a bit :)

Thanks, I managed to login using the open ID thingy. I assume that means I can keep in touch with folks who goto DW even if I don't get an account?

So far it looks shiny, opn a limited exposure. The main requirement will be for all our friends to be here...

Yes, you can basically use the openID thing to "friend" or subscribe to journals, just like on LJ. Then you can read them on your reading page. And as you've already discovered, you can make comments as yourself, with your icons.

The only thing you can't do without a full account is make your own posts.
